Details (where the Devil is)

Are you still spending countless hours detailing your Revit projects? What if you could find most of the details in native Revit files, properly built with detail components linked to Building Product Manufacturers (BPM) in a library of (currently) 125,925 drafting views organized nicely and very easy to preview and navigate through? Oh, and did I forget to mention it’s for free to the user?? Sounds like a pretty good deal to me!

ARCxlMark Siever of ARCxl has successfully transformed this venture from being a fee-based service for the end user into a totally free service thanks to the involvement of BPMs through direct links to their product offerings. Now I know that most firms will have something to say about how this and that looks and how they don’t fit their standards, etc., but keep in mind that with these details you get very close to the end goal much faster than starting from scratch. (Drafted) Detail Management

A topic of great importance to all architects is that of detailing a project. Despite working in three-dimensional models, we still have to communicate how all the different systems and materials come together through the use of drawn details, whether using 2D or 3D representations. And we still use paper to print out our document sets and send them out for bid. From that perspective, not much has changed in our industry and the need for drafted details is still amongst us for the foreseeable future.

Representing details through the use of 2D drawings does not require complex software. Revit is more than capable of this task although it might not have all the bells and whistles that Autocad has (like trimming elements through the use of crossing windows, etc.)Building drafting views and using detail components extensively can yield great efficiencies and possibilities that are not obtainable if you simply use detail lines and filled regions. One such benefit is the ability to store assembly codes and thus the ability to tie to an automated specification system. This takes effort to set up, but with some good time investment, you could end up with a very efficient system that cuts down on redundant work.

Unfortunately Revit does not offer enough functionality to manage a drafted library appropriately, whether it is built-in tools/functionality or API options. I’m talking about a seamless system of filtering, searching, viewing and insertion. I could write a dissertation about what I've tried to experiment with, including Model Review for filtering purposes, but there is always a limitation that breaks this whole process. Note that if you want to organize a single-office library, you can get something that works ok, but if you want to build some sort of filtering for a multi-office/region library, well then stop banging your head! Current tools offer a series of fragmented solutions at best.

After dreaming about this over the last years, even having nightmares about being chased down the alley by hundreds of duplicated detail components while in a project file (you know what I’m talking about!), ArcXLthe entrepreneurial spirit that drives some people wipes these feelings away and replaces them with a grin. Take a look at ARCxl.

This company has come up with a promising approach to organizing details. I talked with Mark Siever about their ambitious plans and they do not intend to sell the management system as a standalone piece of software. They are exploring various business models and so far, they have invested a lot of time and effort in building up the infrastructure and an extensive library of details. My first thoughts were that this is a fantastic avenue for small firms and sole practitioners. Imagine focusing more on design, solving the building, creating presentations and spending very little time on drafting details. Through their site, you can narrow down your search by picking building systems, which to me, is extremely intuitive.

They are also exploring a subscription model where you will be able to download a number of details based on the subscription level, rather than purchasing individual details. Their main goal is to get to a point where the details are basically free and disposable. They are really trying to sell the management system as a service, rather than the drafting views as a product. Remember that after you download these views, if you want to re-use them, you’re back to the same old problems of management. So having a place that helps you cut to the chase in finding exactly what you want is their target.

But they’re not stopping there. They are developing further infrastructure that ties into an online specification system. Through building product manufacturers that pay for having their products included in this system, the cost for the end user should come down considerably in the near future. If you download their samples and check out the properties of the detail components, you’ll see links that take you to dedicated URLs on their site.

Do I think this concept will succeed? I’m very hopeful but have no crystal ball to tell me. Hey, I thought Twitter was stupid (I still don’t use it, but I’m just one guy!) so who knows? I can see a lot of pitfalls, but the whole concept is very promising. I was excited to see the search system that mirrored almost exactly what I had in mind. How do you see this fit in your practice or firm, big or small? Would you want the ability to upload your own details to their site so your organization can find and use them efficiently, instead of the details they provide? Detailing issues after Rotating Project North

A couple of very useful tools were officially introduced in the 2009 versions of Revit that users had been begging for for quite some time. One was the Mirror Project tool and the other was the Rotate Project North tool.

How many times have you started drawing/modeling a building only to find out it doesn't fit nicely on sheets? As a "standard", we always try to orient Project North as close as possible to True North. But at times we find out too late that it would have been better to orient Project North differently.

With this new tool, we can rotate our project, associated views, tags, etc. at the same time. This is a huge time saver but comes at a price. It's a tool that has problems, so don't expect to come out unscathed. You might have to do some touch-up work to correct some things that don't rotate properly. As we shall see, some issues are currently not correctable, but it helps to know what can happen and be aware of potential workarounds. Note also that the Mirror Project tool has similar issues, but once again, it can save a lot of time when designs change and we want to flip the building when we're already far into documentation!

I came across a problem recently and thought that some elevation views had gotten corrupted. When the user tried to draw a view-specific element, such as a detail line or a filled/masking region, Revit returned an error because "the Work Plane is at a very sharp angle". Now we know that these elements are not drawn on a typical work plane like other elements, such as model lines, so this error is a little bit out of place.

Project North Issue

I sent the file to Support (pays to be a subscriber!) and it was pointed out that the Project North might have been changed on this project and could be causing the problem. We confirmed that the team did use the tool, and unfortunately there is currently no solution to correct this, except to re-create the elevations in this case. It was interesting to see that elevation callouts created from these "defective" views worked just fine.

Once I became aware of the repercussions, I took it a bit further and tested Section views. Turns out that these are affected in the same way as Elevation views. So make sure to rotate Project North early in the process and don't wait too long!

Workarounds

Short of deleting existing vertical views and re-creating them, there is something you could do. If you create a callout view in your "defective" elevations/sections, you can add the view-specific detail elements in the new callouts. Then copy them and paste-aligned to the original view. These will appear as expected but they cannot be edited easily (no grips). You can also create detail groups of these view specific elements, which will allow you to edit them in other views, even Drafting views. If you don't need the callouts, you can delete them and re-create as necessary when needing to edit your detail items perhaps.

As you can see, it can get a bit convoluted! If you're early in the process, I'd suggest re-creating the views. But if you're further along and have invested a lot of hours in those views already, you might consider these techniques until this known issue is resolved.
